SEO Glossary of Terms

    Search Engine Algorithm or Algo - formula a search engine uses to rank websites for a given term.

    Anchor Text - the actual text used within a link. i.e. Internet Marketing Blog - the anchor text is "Internet Marketing Blog". Achor text is used by search engines within their algorithms to rank pages.

    BackLinks or Back Links - links that point to your website from another. Many search engines view these links as a "vote" for your site and use the info to rank your site.

    Blog - Web Log. Diary of thoughts and opinions.

    Index - search engines "index" the content on a website. They then have a main index where the information they collect is kept. This allows for quick search results.

    Meta Tags - used to denote what a web page is about. The Title tag is visible in the browser bar. The Keyword and Description tags are not visible to users without "viewing source".

    PPC or Pay Per Click - placing an ad or ads on a search engine and paying each time a user clicks on your ad. The major search engines who offer PPC advertising include Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Ask.

    Search Engine Spider or Bot - the program that crawls (visits) a website to read it's content and links.

    SEM or Search Engine Marketing - the combination of SEO, PPC management, and social marketing to drive traffic to a website.

    SEO or Search Engine Optimization - the art of manipulating content, internal linking structure, and page code to rank higher for a given term within a search engine.
